My mother lived in the memory care unit from September to November, 2022. The Hearth management was extremely professional and skilled. The care team was outstanding. They treated the residents with gentleness and respect. The care team are well-trained and committed to doing their jobs. At other places, the care team are on their cell phones and ignore the residents. My mother moved to The Hearth from a senior facility in Haverford and The Hearth provided much more attentive care, more engaging activities, and much higher-quality food. It is clean and in good repair. Overall, they cared for my mom very well even though she passed away just a few months after moving in. I'm glad I moved her even for the brief time. She received excellent care at The Hearth.

Very nice community and staff.
This review is for the memory care community, and I should start by pointing out that it is important to evaluate a facility based on the specific needs of your loved one. In hindsight, this was not a good place for my parent who was very warm and loving and needed a lot of human contact. They are not able to effectively provide that here. The facility is beautiful. The activities director is fabulous and really worked with us to accommodate our parent’s interests. But the most important part of a care community is the caregiving staff who takes care of the residents 80% of the time. In this area, the Hearth fails. They are understaffed and apparently don’t pay enough to get top quality caregivers. It is normal to find residents parked in front of the tv with caregivers on their phones not taking the opportunity to interact with or engage the residents who need it. It is unusual to find the caregivers smiling or being warm and kind. They manage the residents as opposed to really caring for them and engaging with them. This really hurt my parent, and I’m confident it shortened their life. Another concern is that care records and plans are not fully computerized which, in our case led to medication errors and inconsistent care. Sadly, there are not many better choices...I can honestly say we looked at them all. In my opinion, the best approach if your loved one can’t stay at home, is to plan to augment a facility with some private care...especially in the evenings and at night.

After several months of marketing to us, the "assessment" was completed, and concluded that the Hearth could not assure the safety of my parents in their setting. This came as a bit of a surprise.

I found out that this community was not a bad place but it was not giving me the extra care I needed. I went in there thinking I would get more care. I could not get the care I needed.

The staff gave a wonderful tour of the community. They were very friendly and knowledgeable and it was very nice there. We just felt that it was a bit smaller than what my parents were looking for and the pricing was also a little high.

We visited quite a few communities and this one was the best fit for my parents. The facility is relatively new only a couple of years old it is well maintained very clean. The staff is wonderful very friendly to the residents and their families. My parents go down to the dining area to eat meals and the food is wonderful. The community offers quite a bit of thing to do however my parents are the type of people to participate.

The Hearth at Drexel is a first rate operation. I sensed a level of confident professionalism when scouting out assisted living facilities which was in distinct contrast with some of the more "hard sell" experiences elsewhere. The Hearth benefits from its quiet location, its historically certified central mansion, and its attractive units for its residents. In design and execution it is a choice selection.

A Place for Mom has scored The Hearth at Drexel 8.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
