The Buckingham is a large senior living community in Houston, Texas. While it is in the city, it's close to many parks and outdoor spaces, and residents often enjoy looking out over the nearby forest from their rooms or the patio. Houston is a cultural center of the Lone Star state. It’s known for its great international food scene, museums, and the Space Center. Residents and visitors will always find something fascinating, historic, and cutting-edge to enjoy in Houston.
As a large community, The Buckingham offers comprehensive senior care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation, and skilled nursing. Residents benefit from the seamless transition to different types of care as their needs change, and families take relief in knowing their loved ones can stay in a familiar setting. All residents live in private apartments, although seniors in independent living have the option to reside in one of the townhomes. All of the facilities are spotlessly clean and the campus is quiet, without traffic noise or distractions.
The staff does their best to empower residents to use their golden years to do what they’ve always wanted to do, whether it’s using the fitness room to become healthier, tending to their own...

We love the Buckingham! There is something for everyone around here. Too many activities and outings to list. Special events, Lecture's, trips, clubs. You name it. Plus the food is incredible. Seriously - we love eating here it makes going out to a restaurant a chore. Especially when you can have steak and salmon every night if you want.

The food served here is as good or better than most restaurants, and the selections are amazing. You can get most anything even if it is not on the menu of the day. The people who live here are delightful and so friendly. The people who work here are also very friendly and most know your name. When the time comes, there are several places you can move to where you can be taken care of: assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care.

My wife and I have many medical appointments at the medical center. We have taken the free Buckingham service to every appointment, always on time, dropped off at the entrance, no parking worries. A great service!

I have lived at The Buckingham for over 11 years. It was one of the smartest moves I ever made! Beautiful building and apartment; outstanding, friendly and helpful staff; extremely friendly and interesting residents; gourmet dining; and more activities than one person has time to attend.

My Mother moved into the Buckingham 2006. She lived in her own apartment. Everyone was so wonderful to her. She met so many new friends! I was so happy she was there! The dining room is so lovely and the food yummy! Then in 2021 she had to move into Skilled nursing. They were all wonderful to her! I went everyday to visit her...then they suggested that she was not doing well..so hospice came. She passed April 2022. I have such good memories there!

Great staff, amazing food, 23 acres of beautiful trees and flowers, and wise use of retirement funds. It was the best Senior Community we visited in Houston and felt like home right away. We're so glad to be here!

The staff was not very responsive. They were on their phones.. too much turnover. Nobody seemed to know what was going on. The activity leader, [name removed] was great.

What our family likes the most about The Buckingham community is the meals that are prepared, the staff members working there and the facility overall. Based on the experience we have had so far, we would recommend this community to others.

I had a horrible experience with Buckingham facility and staff they do not have any concerns about there patients , I was mistreated by Buckingham nurses and nursing aids , Avoid this place ,The building seems look nice but don't be fooled , be careful before you choose this place not enough staff to help in the skilled nursing area specially at night time shift there nurses and nursing aids wore dysfunction , rude, hostile, mean, had a horrible attitude lazy, tread patient without respect, they are so under staffed not enough nurses and nursing aids, they wore unprofessional, the nurses and aids wore uneducated , untrained, my family had to stay with me most of the time specially at night time to track down a CNA to help assist going to bathroom or bring my medication after pressing call button and no one showing up and my family had to go find someone to come and help me. Please don't leave your loved ones unattended at this place, Medication are not done correctly , No adequate system .....There was not any attention to detail in care and cleanliness . The odor when you walk in will knock you over almost they were roaches on multiple occasions, roaches in hallway dinning hall , room , bathroom , shower . It is really just been a disappointing experience in general . AVOID BUCKINGHAM facilities !!!!

As lovely as this facility may seem, don't be fooled. Administrators are all about the money. The admissions counselor would not give the time of day for us to explain what type of care was needed or about the issues causing the need for care. She would only go back to her original question of "how will you pay?" This facility is listed on medicare.gov as accepting medicare, and we all know that after medicare pays its portion, the remainder will be paid at an 80/20 split. Admissions would not even discuss payments, or billing, or the like. During our short conversation, she would only repeat the same questions over and over - how will you pay?, how are you planning to pay?, what funds to you have available? Pretty sad for this 'not-for-profit' business. I do not recommend these money-hungry folks to take care of your loved ones. If money is all they care about, the chances of them giving necessary care, meds, foods, etc. are pretty low - because those things might actually cost them a dime.

Response from The Buckingham
August 27, 2018Barbara, finding the right community for a parent or loved one can be an arduous process, particularly when they may need some form of additional care or assistance. Our admissions team works very closely with potential residents and their families to determine the best plan for them, including specific care and financial requirements. We’d appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience further. To maintain the privacy of you and your family, please contact Michael Cummings, our Healthcare Administrator, directly at [removed].
It is not equipped with diversions for residents who have auditory and visual impairments. It would behoove the The facility to invest in providing activities for these Forgotten residents. The nursing care was < adequate. One resident fell out of bed and hit her head on simulated hardwood flooring, no neuro ck ,no ice on area ,no x-ay of head.

Response from The Buckingham
August 23, 2018We continue to invest significant resources into our health services through new technology, more modern, efficient spaces and, most importantly, some of best health professionals in the Houston area. We’re very proud of the services we provide and the outcomes we achieve, and all of this drives the high marks we consistently receive from regulatory agencies like CMS. We can assure you there are no forgotten residents at The Buckingham, and the ever-changing daily schedule of activities, entertainment, excursions, educational and wellness opportunities are geared to support all our residents, regardless of physical or other impairments. We welcome the opportunity to speak with you further to address any of your concerns, keeping in mind we strictly adhere to HIPAA guidelines and the protection of our residents’ privacy. Please give Darrell Sheaffer, our executive director, a call at [removed].
They took good care of my Dad in the Skilled Nursing Area. They had some communication issues that did cause some big confusion on the part of the family. I believe the Rehabilitation and Social Work staff would greatly benefit from extra training in active listening.

Be careful. We were told prior to admission that care was covered under my mom's insurances. She received a bill from house doctor for $5000.00 for her two month stay in SNF. They were "going to look into it", but said she was responsible for that, in addition to other out of pocket charges discussed ahead of time. We had a lot of issues with basics such as feeding when we were not there to assist and being left in soiled diapers for long periods of time. My mom was unable to do these for herself because both shoulders were broken, hence a SNF unit. If you could do things such as feeding, bathing, and using restroom by yourself they seemed OK, but my mom needed more care.

Response from The Buckingham
January 26, 2017Julie, I want to sincerely apologize again for any inconvenience this has caused you and your mother. As we discussed earlier, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again, and are working with our group of physicians to find an acceptable resolution for your family. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, and I look forward to speaking with you again shortly. Julie Fenske, Executive Director, The Buckingham
This review is specifically for the assisted living and skilled nursing sections of The Buckingham, The Plaza. I believe they do a great job at both levels of care, although the longterm nursing is particularly good. At all levels of care, the independent living included, the food is incredible. It's very well prepared and they've got a lot of variety in the menu. They also have a lot for the residents to do, although I feel like they could do a better job at having activities targeted at individuals. I would definitely recommend taking a look into this community.

All levels of care--COntinual Care retirement community. Beautiful and excellent location-- Will not allow Mom and Dad and Mom to live together unless Mom went into assisted living due to Dad's mild dementia-- Not an option at this time. An option for Mom possibly later on. $5k to $8k per month depending upon apt. size. Buy-in required starting at $250k--90% refundable to estate.

A Place for Mom has scored The Buckingham 9.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
