My husband has lived at Sunrise of Newton for a little more than a year in a transition from home due to physical and cognitive limitations. The facility is contemporary and lovely with large comfortable rooms and public spaces. The enclosed outdoor space is very inviting when the weather is good. The best feature is the staff - all are attentive, competent, and caring and seem to know the names of all the residents. The dining room is inviting with good food, attentive wait staff, and accommodations if nothing on the menu appeals. Additional group social activities would be welcome, although retaining social directors seems to be a universal issue. My family was searching options for future care accommodations for our family member. When we met with Sunrise of Newton, it was clear and apparent that should we need future placement, this was definitely the place. The staff went above and beyond explaining and then showing us their facility and programs. We met various staff members and toured the entire facility, inside and out. The apparent quality of care, cleanliness, professional approach and attention to detail and to their clientele, as well as options for individualized care, made it clear to us that, should there be a time when our loved one needed more help than we could provide on our own, this facility would be an excellent choice for them and for us as a family to be our loved one's home.

Response from Sunrise of Newton
December 1, 2023Thank you for your positive review. We are happy that the caregivers and team have made a great impression on you and your loved one.
During our search for a Memory Care facility for my dad, the top facility recommended was Sunrise of Newton, based on the high level of care that we needed for my him(he has Parkinsonism and needs help with all of his activities of daily living). We were looking forward to having him be part of a community and to have social interaction. The facilities at Sunrise were beautiful and the staff were extremely friendly. The facility, however, was going through many personnel changes and many aspects of my dad's care fell through the cracks. First and foremost, we brought him there for the activities. Every day, an average of 6-7 events was posted. In reality, 0-1 occurred each day. When they did happen, they often forgot to bring my dad, or brought him down late. This also occurred for meals, and I found him, on multiple occasions, in the dining area by himself 2 hours after mealtime. The schedule indicated that fitness classes were supposed to occur on most days. In the 60+ days that my dad was there, they only occurred on 3 days. There was often little coordination when events were supposed to occur- with the kitchen being unaware of events that they were supposed to provide food. Most of the time, when I came to visit, my dad was in his room, by himself, staring out the window. Most concerning was the facilities inability to give him his medications at the times that he would normally get them (which is very important in Parkinsonism). Typically he would get his first dose of medication at 7am. There, there were several occasions where he hadn't received meds until after 9 (there was only 1 nurse distributing meds). In the evening, he would normally have his last dose of medication between 9 and 9:30. There was no one available at Sunrise to give meds after 8 pm, but even when we asked for them at 8, they would still sometimes give him is evening dose at 6:30. We ended up having to hire a private caregiver to collect the medication when it was brought to his room and give it to him at the appropriate time. Also, because of the staffing shortage, no one sat down with us to develop a care plan when he moved in. It wasn't until after I contacted the Executive Director that anyone sat down with us to review to create the plan. At that meeting, we were told that someone would look into the medication issue (which no one did)- and many of the other activities that had been promised did not occur. They did finally take the evening movie off the schedule (every night a movie was listed that was going to be played in the media room, but it never happened. It was very disappointing for my dad, who was looking forward to what was on the schedule). We payed for the highest level of care (nearly $[removed]/day) and still had to pay an extra $[removed]/day for a private caregiver to dress my dad (it was not done by the staff on a regular basis) and give him his night meds at 9 instead of 6:30 PM. There was one day that no one came in to get him for breakfast or give him medications (we found him half naked standing in his room at 10:30 AM). We asked for them to remind him to drink water- which the nurses did, but the caregivers did not. It doesn't seem like the level of care that we paid for actually was communicated to the staff. Despite our more than weekly reminders, it took more than 8 weeks for the facility to submit the necessary documentation to our long term care insurance to see if it was even a covered facility. The regular nursing staff was wonderful. There were several mistakes made by the agency visiting nurses (at least 3 that I was aware of). One evening, either my dad didn't receive his night medications (or they were given before 4 when our caregiver arrived). The staff was unable to reach anyone to rectify this. I had to bring them from home and administer them. These are just some of the examples of issues we experienced. At no time did the facility try to make up for the situation. The most we ever got was a "We are sorry, we'll do better." It looks like the new staffing was going to make some changes, but overall we were extraordinarily disappointed with our experience at Sunrise of Newton.

December 8, 2023Hi Lauren, We take your experience with Sunrise of Newton very seriously and would like to review this matter closer. Please contact info@sunriseseniorliving.com so we can promptly review and address these concerns. – The Sunrise Team
My mother has been living here for about 3 months. I can't say enough about the staff. To a person, they are kind caring and attentive. This applies to the care givers, cleaning staff, maintenance and management. Like most organizations today, staffing is an issue. Although sometimes short staffed, those that are there make the experience positive for the residents. Keeping the residents engaged and active is a critical aspect of senior living and Sunrise does this very effectively. Not only does the staff and management listen to concerns, they act very quickly and effectively to address any concerns. Lastly but certainly not least is safety. A wise use of technology compliments the staffing in keeping my mother and all residents safe and affords our family peace of mind.

Check out dining service, question services like shower assistance, laundry, room services, check out reality of activities. I picked this community, because of the proximity to home for wife to visit, price, and availability of appropriate handicapped accessible studio apartment. Would recommend. Ask about staff turnover and staff retention. Sunrise is a large corporation with many sites an it seems corporate policies are less favorable than local resident needs would prefer. Also a bit disorganized with different groups out of touch/sync with each other. Interview care manager in depth before deciding.

Response from Sunrise of Newton
June 7, 2023Hi, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Newton. We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review!
We toured with Sunrise of Newton and it was a lovely facility and all of the people we met with were great. For us at the time it was just too new, they only had 4 residents in the assisted living side of the facility so it was just not established yet. I think if my loved one were not as far gone as he was, it could have been a good fit. It was just not a good fit at the stage he was at. It looked like a really nice place and the people that were there were happy.

I think it's a very welcoming place. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and kind. But the care is a bit lacking. For instance, if my loved one rings his call pendant, it's a long time before somebody comes, which is not acceptable. That's my main problem. The common areas are very clean, although his room less so. There is inconsistency in when they come to clean his room and do laundry. It gets done, but there's no clear pattern to it. They are currently In the process of finding a new Executive Director. The interim Executive Director is very nice, but I think he's not running the place the way a full time Executive Director would. I think that contributes to some of the issues we're seeing. The food is just okay. Otherwise, everything is lovely. There seems to be a lot of activities going on. And the staff really is terrific. I never see anybody who isn't smiling and kind and nice. They're just really great people.

We picked this community because of the convenient location. They don't always clean weekly. The Director does not always get back to me. The majority of the office people are friendly. The food is horrible. The value for the money is reasonable. There was issues with the billing.

It's a very bright and happy place. My father seems to be enjoying Sunrise of Newton now. He's on the memory loss floor which was a huge adjustment at first. He rarely spends time in his room now which is so wonderful to hear. My only complaint at the moment is my father runs out of toilet paper quite often.

My loved one has been very happy here. It's a fantastic place. Not only has my loved one felt very safe and secure here, but also very at home. The staff has made sure that they make him feel like part of the family. The manager has been a tremendous help with my loved one's dog. I would absolutely recommend this facility to family and friends.

March 1, 2023Hi Cathy, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise Newton and the dedicated care givers and team members. We are passionate about our community and always enjoy hearing the many beautiful stories about our residents and team members.
This is a very nice facility. It's brand new and beautiful. Communication with the family is very good. The staff are very helpful and good about follow up when needed. The overall cleanliness of the facility is very good, but we've had some issues with cleanliness of my loved one's room. I think part of that was because they were short staffed and I know that's with every place. But it's getting better. The food is ok overall, some meals are great and some not so great. They seem to be better on the Assisted Living side. I've noticed that not all of the menu items that are available in the dining room/Assisted Living are available for the Memory Care residents. Overall, it's a very nice place. I would definitely recommend this facility to family and friends.

The staff were very kind and supportive, and the facility is beautiful. They were only one of 3 facilities in the state to accept our loved one who was less than 55, and their decision to be flexible in this regard was life saving. She was warmly embraced. The services were so-so in that trash and room cleaning was not tended to as advertised. Meals were so-so and kitchen had difficulty with special orders. Care coordination was a challenge with extra care provision and hospice but improved once we (family) took the lead in bringing the parties together for coordination.

I toured Sunrise of Newton and the tour itself was excellent. They gave me all of the information I needed and our tour guide was very great. When touring around, what you want is for someone to be candid about their facility, as well as providing you with all the information you need - and they were excellent in that regard. Our decision to choose another community was locational. There are 3 siblings who are all coming from 3 different places, and geographically the other community was more sustainable for us.
