Golden Living of Pt. Loma is, in my view, one of the greatest cheap assisted living facilities in San Diego, along with [removed], where my parents dwell. Many of my extended family have resided at Golden Living of Point Loma throughout the years. The staff does an excellent job of providing care and keeping the place clean. Their budget is minimal in compared to other area hospitals, yet the quality of care is not compromised. Meals are not spectacular, but they are nutritious and balanced, much like meals-on-wheels. The rooms are roomy, and I only had to request maintenance once to have one item repaired. Many shops are within walking distance for those who are ambulatory.

Looking at the pictures online of Golden Living it looked very clean and super nice, however when we walked through the front doors it was like walking through hell. Everything from top to bottom was fifthly, the entire place was dirty. The meals were not great and we had no idea if they had activities or not. There was horrible communication, the staff dressed unprofessionally and there was little to no supervision. It was not a good experience and the community was great misrepresented. It was scary looking to say the least, and we would not recommend.

If you are thinking about placing your loved one here, think again. I had my loved one there for 8 days and they were in the emergency room twice within 48 hours of admission and I was never contacted. I went to pick them up and move them to a board and care and had to call 911 instead since he had a broken hip!! He was able to walk when he was admitted. I was not ever told he fell. The bruise on his shoulder and the broken hip tell a different story!

This is not fancy and I’d love to say my mom was in a swanky place. However, the staff at Golden Living adore their residents and they treat my mother like a queen. My mom resisted needing care and had been there for 8 years. I go see her at least once a month and so does my brother and her grandkids. I know most of the residents by name and I know the staff. They know me as well. My mom basically quit eating 6 months ago and the only thing she likes are fast food milk shakes. The staff gets her special food everyday as she likes. I do put a small stash of cash w the front office and they let me know when my funds run out. I love Golden Living. The residents are mostly on SSI but the staff takes care of each resident. They have special dinners, games, events and the residents love them. The care providers atevare amazing. Never complain. I tell you, I can’t change elder diapers and they do it with joy and no complaint. I’m reading some of these reviews and they are harsh. My mother’s name is [name removed] and I know first hand the kindness this place gives our mom. Don’t dismiss it. It’s a diamond in the rough. Call Sonata Hospice and ask them about the facility.

Unfortunately the staff there do not care for the residents properly. They have been cited for many wrong doings. All are available on CCLD website.

I suspect many of the residents are living on SSI, so you cannot really expect a lot. This is an older facility that is not particularly well-maintained. If you are on SSI and can get in, it is a good deal. If you are private pay and this is all you can afford, it is a good deal. Recently (late 2016) the food has gotten much better, as they have new cooks. The staff is generally fairly proficient in English, kind, and pleasant, but certainly not trained to any discernible level. For that reason, I would be very cautious before placing anyone in their memory care wing, unless this is the best you can afford. If you have long term care insurance and/or a healthy monthly income, I might suggest visiting to get a baseline so that you can compare with what other, more expensive facilities offer. It is not a bad place. It is clean enough, active enough, and provides shelter, food, and some activities for a very reasonable price.

Do not like that area! Too close to very busy streets, doesn't look good at all. I would not want my mom there. No place to walk.

We weren't really impressed with this. It was smaller with shared rooms and shared bathrooms. That was a deal breaker for us. It also felt more like a house.

The administrator seemed great. She was caring and enthusiastic. They seem to really do their best to avoid hidden costs and make sure it is workable for the patients. But the facility is poorly located directly behind a strip of fast food restaurants. It is small and smells bad. There were several residents just sitting in wheel chairs in the hallway doing and saying nothing. They were just warehoused. I would never put my mother here.

A Place for Mom has scored Golden Living of Pt. Loma 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
