This care community is nestled in a lushly wooded 5-acre campus in the North Riverside Forest Preserve. Just a few miles west of downtown Chicago, the home has convenient access to the city while also maintaining a tranquil and private atmosphere. The campus features two senior living homes.
The MacLean House offers skilled compassionate memory care for up to 10 residents. The house has private suites, full baths, and a great room centered around a large fireplace. With a high ratio of trained staff to residents, each memory care community resident receives individualized and nurturing support. The Scottish Home offers a range of continuing care services right from community members’ private apartments.
Whether in the MacLean House or the Scottish Home, Caledonia offers a flexible approach to senior living, enabling residents to successfully age in place. Community members have access to skilled nursing care around the clock. Experienced and compassionate care staff offer assistance with activities of daily living, diabetic care, ambulatory support, incontinence support, and more. Residents enjoy delicious meals with accommodations for a range of dietary needs. Housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and a range of social and spiritual activities are offered daily.

Staff generally caring, all try to meet resident needs. More activities might be helpful, but ones we do have are very good.

My sister is very happy here, she is in the memory care unit. She said it is a very beautiful place and the memory care section is newer. I do think they could use more activities but I know that is hard with the different levels of care. I would recommend to others looking, they are very careful about covid and are keeping their residents safe. They do have nurses on duty here 24/7 which is very nice.
We chose Caledonia Senior because another family member had been here and we had word of mouth that it was a good facility. We liked that it was smaller, we felt that he would get more personalized services that way. The room sizes are on the smaller side, but for my father in law it is just perfect for his needs. I think that encourages people to go to the common areas to participate in more activities. We have found it to be a very nice place. The staff are very caring, friendly, and we have been very happy with our choice.

During this time of COVID, the staff have been really proactive and have done a very good job at keeping the residents safe and protected. They have done a good job at communicating with families and sending updates on group emails about how they are handling the situation in the building. My mother chose this community because, when she visited, she got a good feeling from the staff members. The only issue we have found has been the differing political opinions, as the community leans conservative. My mom thinks the food is good but not gourmet.

Very old facility with lots of chipping paint, musty smells, poor maintenance. Garden areas were not well maintained. Depressing. Rooms looked like over-sized dorm rooms. Bathroom had no shower (are you kidding me?????). The sink was small with no counter. Poor lighting in the bathroom. How do these people think elderly people with poor eyesight can use this area? The dining room was hideous. I read the menu to mom who said that nothing (of the 2 options-sweet and sour chicken and fried shrimp) sounded appetizing. This looked more like a nursing home than a retirement home. Depressing. They offer lots of support for the residents but mom isn't quite at the point where she needs all the things they offer. The environment, the food, the socialization and as-needed support are what we are looking for. Not one resident stopped my mom to tell her how they liked living there. When we were at every other place residents stopped my mom to encourage her to move there. That didn't happen here.

Can't even imagine what my dearly departed Grandma had to endure having to be under the same roof with the worker [name removed]. This lady was very RUDE to me, not once but twice after My Mutti past. [Name removed] rudely hung up on me several times.

the facilities are beautiful and the overall atmosphere is very calming. They could use a little more help.

The above ( below) poster said everything i wanted to say. There are new caregivers everyday, and this past weekend they had NO aides. None. My elderly friend was in a soiled hospital gown at 10am. The teeth cleaning thing was confirmed by our dentist- it never happens. There are always 6 or so people in wheel chairs coraled by the desk who cry out for assistance and are mocked by the staff. I'm surprised no one has reported them to the state yet. And all for a measly $10,000+ a month.

This wouldn't be the first choice for a parent, if the choice were to be made again. Each time I'd visit, there would be many new faces at any given time. I talked to the coordinator about the constant turn over of staff. I was told the CNAs don't stay long, because hospitals pay better. Once they get a hospital job they realize how much more work it is. Don't be surprised to see your loved one with food spilled on their clothes when you visit. Also, the wheel chair would be filthy, having remnants of spilled food. I asked about morning hygiene routine, which they were always short on staff. My mother's teeth were brushed only when we brushed them ourselves. Dinner hour was hard to visit, people were sitting there who needed to be fed, rarely enough help. I never left there with a dry eye... The Scottish Home is private pay only. I highly recommend to do some serious research before your loved one moves into The Scottish Home. Although, The Scottish Home is always clean.

A Place for Mom has scored Caledonia Senior Living and Memory Care 8.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
