Very welcoming staff and community. They have learned the names of my brothers and my children and they greet us by name whenever we show up. They treat my mother and us with kindness, dignity, and respect. The food has been wonderful - good variety and nice quality. We really liked the size of this facility and the way each building has its own sense of family within the staff and residents. Other places we looked were much larger and we felt Mom wouldn't get the personalized care and attention we wanted her to have. We also toured a smaller facility and felt that was too confined. Shadowlake was really the Goldilocks of assisted-living facilities for us!

Brookdale Shadowlake is the worst business for elder care I've ever experienced. Avoid it like the plague. The staff don't speak truthfully about what actually goes on at facility.

Response from Brookdale Shadowlake
May 8, 2023We take your comments seriously and are committed to providing quality care and services to our residents. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and hope you will contact our management team to discuss further.
What we really like about this Brookdale community location because it is smaller and you get to really know the staff team and they really get to know the residents and their families really well. They are always willing to be very helpful and accommodating. When it comes to the quality of food that could use some improvement - they could work on having more heart healthy choices.

It was a clean facility. The care services were good. It is very reasonable for the money, which was very good. I liked the facility, it was not too many people, and an overall great place. They had individual buildings. It had a nice kitchen area. I would recommend, this place to anyone. It is good, money wise. Overall, it is a good place for your loved one.

They are understaffed. Thefood is not good. It takes over 30 min to assist loved one. They don't offer a lot of activities, dementia residents. It would be nice if they offered exercising classes. There was a time, in which my loved ones room had not been cleand in weeks or they did not change the sheets.

August 15, 2022Thank you for choosing Brookdale and taking the time to share your feedback. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and encourage you to contact our management team.
Once everything is running at 100% they will get 5 stars - everything is all so new right now. A lot of the staff are newer, the director is newer and so is the activities director. The activities director [name removed] is having to start from scratch but she is highly qualified so we are excited to see where the activities go. They are doing their best keeping up with communication and we would recommend this community to other families to give it a try.

Response from Brookdale Shadowlake
June 8, 2022Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We're glad everything is going well!
We had a great tour with Brookdale Shadowlake. The activities director that we spoke with was amazing, she treated all of the residents like they are her own parents and seemed so engaged. She said that she gets there early every morning to go around and see how everyone is doing. The only reason we did not choose this facility was due to the location.
Brookdale Shadowlake looked like a very nice place, we like the set-up of the facility. The rooms were nice. You did not have a choice to eat in your room, residents have to eat in the dining hall. They do take Medicaid and my loved one is on Medicare so there is no way we could have afforded it, it was extremely expensive. It did look a little more institutional and I did not think my loved one would like that.
Brookdale is a great place especially if you don't have the time to take care of your parents, and you want to make sure everything is taken care of with no worries. They are really good at staying in communication if something comes up, and that gives me a peace of mind knowing my loved one is being watched and totally cared for if I can't be the one doing it. They have a nice environment, we found this Brookdale location that is more budget friendly and doesn't look much different than the more expensive one. It has the same layout, floor plan and everything. The only minor things we noticed were some of the buses they drive are older, whereas the more expensive location had newer models - which is completely reasonable and not a big deal. We didn't notice anything drastic aside from small details when we actually moved in, like the outside furniture and screen porch/door were older as well. Those things still looked nice and are in decent shape. They actually said they are working to replace the porch/screen door. I wouldn't have thought twice about it had I not seen the more expensive location first. One of the things that my mom really loves about it is that they have a cottage style, family home-like living. They keep it clean, it smells nice and it's updated with fresh paint. The staff are very friendly, I always see them interacting with her and they are very kind to her - you can't wish for more than that. She has short term memory problems and I don't have to worry that she will mistake her meds or not eat. It took her a while to get used to it and this was a concern of mine, but they assured me that she would adjust. All of a sudden one day it was almost as if she had adjusted overnight and now she's settled. She does have a dog with her and they have wonderful grounds, so she can walk her dog multiple times during the day. I'm really happy with this place and I wish that every senior could afford to stay in a community like this.

Overall, it's very acceptable. Nothing is perfect, but I feel like I'm able to bridge any little gaps between what they don't do. They're very friendly. They know me, and they call me and keep me in the loop. They get to know their residents as well. They're a little short-staffed, but recently I saw the Executive Director cooking breakfast, which shows a willingness to get in there and do what needs to be done. The food is really good. All this type of care is expensive, but I think it's a good value here.

Our family really likes how safe and secured the Brookdale Shadowlake community is.
You just have to stay on top of everything. They do a good job, but if you're paying for those services, you just need to make sure they're providing adequate services. That's everywhere you go though. If my loved one has a complaint, we voice it for her, and management has done a good job being responsive. The daily care staff has been pretty good for the most part, only little issues here and there. They do a decent, average job with cleaning, and it doesn't smell at all.

Only spoke to activities director but she was friendly and helpful. Residents seemed to like her and she knew them all by name. There are activities at the facility but residents are only going out about once a month due to COVID right now. I do like how residents are divided into four areas based on needs and personality. Would consider if I can’t find something near my home. It’s pretty far away and it’s going in towards Houston for me so adds to the time to get there.

The staff members at the Brookdale Shadowlake community, are just wonderful and the food they serve is great. Up until covid their parties were excellent we always had a blast when we visited and our loved one really liked participating in them.

We chose Brookdale Shadowlake at the time because she was at another Brookdale facility so she had already paid the community fee and was comfortable with it so it just made sense. The room sizes at the facility are decent and she says that the food is mediocre. Overall, I would still recommend this community.

The community, in the beginning, it was great because we could see our loved one but its hard covid. The staff is very friendly and they communicate very well. The room sizes are nice and it fits my loved one. I would recommend this community.

It's a good community. COVID had really impacted everything there. There are trying to give you information, keep you updated , and they have been really good about that, but there has been a little bit miscommunication. We chose the community for convenience, it is close to my work. I would recommend this community to other families. The staff are really good and the way the community is set up works really well for my mom and myself.

My mother is in the memory care unit and is not very interactive so I can't speak to the quality of the activities. However, the staff is very attentive and kind. I've dropped in to see how she is doing several times out of the blue and have found her care to be of a consistent quality.

My mom stayed here for 10 days as respite care. It was a lovely place and the staff were really great. I know I can now take a break once in a while and that she will be well cared for. Thank you for helping me find this wonderful solution to my stressful situation.

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale Shadowlake 8.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
