Loving and Supportive Care

My dad spent 1.5 years at ActivCare Mission Bay - he was almost 98 when he passed. Moving him there from another facility was the BEST thing we could have done for him in his final years! He was a retired physician, which was a huge and important part of his life. They did an amazing job in making sure that he continued to feel useful. When he would become upset or agitated, they would ask him to "write a prescription" or check their pulse. They would ask his opinion about other "patients." And they continued to call him "Dr." He absolutely thrived while he was there. Even when they didn't think someone was watching, I would see the staff put a hand on someone's shoulder or talk to them lovingly. He was able to pass here, in the place that he called home. As our family sat with him in his final days, staff came in to say goodbye and tell us how much they loved him.... Read more

About the facility ActivCare at Mission Bay

Spread across well-landscaped grounds, ActivCare at Mission Bay welcomes seniors to a memory care community. Since 2014, this community has been located off the coast in San Diego, California, and within driving distance of the local hospital.

ActivCare at Mission Bay offers specialized memory care with on-site living accommodations. Round-the-clock care is provided by round-the-clock trained caregivers and licensed nurses. Between early stages and end of life stages, including hospice care, the community provides services for all stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. While receiving quality care, residents can live within the community's spacious semi-private and private bedroom options.

When residents are not relaxing in their bedroom, they can explore the various on-site amenities and activities. Themed common rooms with beautiful murals, like in the café-style dining room and activity room, are spread throughout the community. Whether seniors enjoy chef-prepared meals or the community’s daily activities, socialization is encouraged during both. In addition to indoor activities like arts and crafts, live entertainment, and bingo, the community offers outdoor pastimes, including walking club, gardening, and bus rides.

Seniors can receive quality care while living a fulfilling lifestyle in the safe community of ActivCare at Mission Bay.

If I could bring my loved one home, I would. ActivCare is very beautiful; however, more money is spent on the marketing than the care for the residents. This is a place for residents with memory care needs. The human care is very far apart here. There are different wings to the community depending on how far the resident is on their memory care journey. ActivCare has stated they offer transportation to doctor appointments; however, we have found this to not be true during the pandemic. There have been challenges with some other residents going into my loved one's room, arguing with my loved one over my loved one's personal items, and stealing of the personal items of my loved one. The staff were giving medications to my loved one wrong. There wasn't dietary options for my loved one based on their dietary restrictions. There has been a turnover of caregivers and dining staff. The community wanted a very detailed report about my loved one prior to my loved one moving into ActivCare. It is a long process to gain entrance into this place. The staff are finally listening after several meetings with the family to get the proper care for our loved one. There is support with hospice, if your loved one would need it. The staff have made great strides over the time the family has been working with them. I would recommend the family keeps advocating for your loved one while a community is caring for them.

Would recommend

We have had the chance to have our father in ActivCare years ago and now our mother is there, so overall we have been satisfied with the experience. Our mother is currently mentally and physically in a much better place. What really sealed the deal was their floor plan - it is all one floor so all the corridors and hallways lead into the main lobby where their meals and activities are and that is also where you can visit with friends and family. We have been comfortable with the services there and we would definitely recommend them to other families.

A Place for Mom has scored ActivCare at Mission Bay 7.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
